Thirty-five years ago the state removed Olga Burgos from her Hispanic birth home and sent her to live with a white foster mother in the suburbs, sparking a landmark federal lawsuit that bore the little girl's name. Lawyers for her birth parents argued that caseworkers severed Burgos' ties to her culture and destroyed her family bonds. Eventually Burgos was returned to her parents and the state settled the suit, agreeing to provide more Spanish-speaking foster parents, caseworkers and Spanish-language documents. While the public story of the Burgos Decree spoke loudly about the changes in American attitudes toward ethnic diversity, Burgos' personal tale was headed in a different direction. Over three tumultuous decades, she discovered that for her, there was a bond that transcended culture and blood ties.

Blogging has become a very popular way to share facts and opinions on any topic that you could imagine. The majority of legal bloggers are attorneys from small and individually owned firms, while lawyers at large firms have, for the most part, stayed away from it. Join hosts and Law.com bloggers, J. Craig Williams and Bob Ambrogi as they speak to top blawggers, Attorney Denise Howell, whose blawg is Bag and Baggage, Attorney Ernie Svenson, who writes “Ernie the Attorney” and Attorney Howard Bashman, whose blawg is entitled “How Appealing.” Coast to Coast is sponsored by Law.com.
May 13--After the state made it possible for same-sex couples to obtain civil unions, Barbara and Robin Levine-Ritterman of New Haven took advantage of it, but say it still isn't the same as being married. The couple, who are among several plaintiffs in ongoing litigation that seeks to allow gay marriages in Connecticut, is hoping the state Supreme Court will side with them after it hears arguments from both sides Monday. The women got their civil union in December 2005.
